FIQWS: Fall 2018 Phase 3 Calendar 


During Phase 3, you will select and closely analyze one example of a problematic or interesting language practice or belief. You will practice description, critical analysis, and source integration.

Color & Abbreviation KEY:

  • Shaded parts indicate topic section
  • BB = Blackboard
  • UTSA = Upload to Submit Assignments on BB 30 minutes before class (or by 11:59pm on non-class days)
  • BTC = Bring to Class (print the assignment/text & bring it with you)
  • Workshop: On days “workshop” is bolded, students must bring hardcopies of their writing.

Note:  You are required to “BTC” all readings. While you are asked to print & BTC only some assignments, it is recommended that you have access to all readings & all assignments every class (in print or on your laptop/phone). This is because we’ll likely refer back to previous assignments/readings.

HW: Finish reading and annotating Young, “Should Writers Use They Own English?” Write

a one page response summarizing three perspectives: Young’s Fish’s and yours. USTA, print and BTC.

 

IC: Examine Young as a model text. Start thinking about an argument for your essay.

 

HW: Post a response to the example you were assigned on BB by Fri 11/9. Respond to a peer’s post by Mon 11/12 @ 9am. Decide on the example you’ll analyze for your essay. Write, UTSA, and BTC a 1-page description of your example.

 

IC: Introducing Essay Sources and Purpose. Share examples and brainstorm ideas for analysis.

 

W 11/14

 

HW: Zoom in on a topic from the previous night’s writing HW and propose an argument for your Researched Critical Analysis Essay. Write a paragraph stating your argument. UTSA and BTC.

 

IC: Class meets in STC3. Locate sources that will help you discuss/analyze your issue.

 

HW: Read “The Analytical Frame of Mind”. Write analysis of your example and how you plan to build your argument using your sources. UTSA on BB and BTC.

 

IC: Analysis and Argument-Considering the rhetorical situation and drafting an argument. Share arguments you plan to use.
